Looking Professional on Site

Most customers can't judge the quality of your work until the job's done. So they judge everything else instead: how you look, what you turn up in, how you talk to them and how you leave their home.

Looking professional isn't about being posh. It's about making people feel confident they picked the right person. Here's how.

Before you arrive

Your quote

A clear, itemised quote with your logo and details on it looks miles more professional than a price sent over text. It also cuts down on arguments later about what was included.

Confirm the day before

A quick message the day before confirming the time builds trust straight away. If you're running late, let them know before you're late, not after.

Your online presence

Plenty of customers will look you up before you arrive. A proper website and Google Business Profile with real photos and reviews means they're already confident before you knock on the door.

When you turn up

Your van

A clean, branded van parked outside tells the customer, and their neighbours, that a real business has turned up. A plain, filthy van does the opposite. Even simple signwriting makes a big difference.

What you're wearing

Matching branded workwear instantly marks you out from someone who does it on the side. It doesn't need to be fancy, just clean, consistent and with your name on it.

First impressions

  • Introduce yourself and anyone with you
  • Run through what you're doing today and how long it'll take
  • Ask about anything they need you to know: parking, pets, which toilet to use

While you're working

  • Protect their home. Dust sheets, floor protection and shoe covers in customers' homes go a long way
  • Keep the work area tidy. Not just at the end, during the job too
  • Keep them updated. If something unexpected comes up, tell them straight away, with options and prices, before you carry on
  • Watch the language and the radio. What's normal on site isn't always normal in someone's kitchen

When you finish

  • Leave it cleaner than you found it. Customers remember a tidy finish more than almost anything else
  • Walk them through the work. Show them what you've done and anything they need to know
  • Send a proper invoice. Branded, clear and sent promptly
  • Ask for a review. Happy customers are usually glad to leave one, they just need asking. A review on your Google Business Profile helps you win the next job

Customers don't remember the cable runs or the pipework. They remember whether you were on time, polite and tidy.

Why it matters

Looking professional isn't just about one job. It's about the recommendation afterwards, the review that wins you the next customer, and being the person they ring next time without getting three quotes.

The easy wins are the ones you only sort once: a branded van, matching uniforms, proper quotes and invoices, and a website that backs it all up. If you're just getting started, our new company starter pack covers the lot in one go. Or for more on uniforms, see what a trades uniform should include.
